3D (3 dimensions) refers to synthetic imaging that offers close to reality renders. It delivers great results when used in animated content or Motion Graphics. While realism is sought after in certain applications such as architectural visualisation, it is trivial in Motion Design in general. 3D production offers impressive results and a wider range of techniques to create and animate. It has, however, a drawback of requiring important render times and more overall duration of work, hence its relatively higher cost!
